The writing and setting out of essential information in a way that gives a motivated and co-operative reader a good chance of understanding the document at first reading and in the same sense that the writer meant it to be understood.
Legal English is the style of English used by lawyers and other legal professionals in the course of their work. It has particular relevance when applied to legal writing and the drafting of written material. Legal English has traditionally been the preserve of lawyers from English-speaking countries (especially the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand) which have shared common law traditions. However, due to the spread of English as the predominant language of international business, as well as its role as a legal language within the European Union, now the Legal English is a global phenomenon.
‘Legal writing’ is a type of technical writing used by the persons associated with law to express legal analysis and legal rights and duities. Good legal writing can convey legal rules, legal concepts, and legal arguments in a simple, clear, and comprehensible manner.
The book focuses on areas such as Search of Legal Material, Identification of legal terms and explanation of those terms, Need for Legal Writing, etc., It also discusses how to use equivalent other terms, Techniques of search and identification of Case laws, Analysis of the point of law involved and arriving at the answers to the questions of law. The book also focuses ‘civil law’ suits, cases of ‘criminal law’, ‘legal writings’ such as Pleadings, Plaint ,Written Statement, Affidavit, Sale, Agreement of Sale, Power of Attorney, Legal Notice, etc. Written for law students of the Five year law degree course to get a broad understanding of the topics that would be covered under the revised syllabi with effect from the academic year 2009-2010, this book will also be useful to anyone grappling with the basics of legal language or the peculiarities of the profession.
We owe our gratitude to Mr. D. Durga Prasad, LL.B, FCS, for his personal attention, inputs and technical support. Our thanks are also due to Mr. M. Venkateswarlu for his wholehearted and efficient secretarial support in bringing out this Book.
